Pass The Aux! – July 2022

Pass the Aux, a series dedicated to amplifying new and upcoming musicians. We will get you up-to-date in discovering new music monthly to the point where your friends will ask you to “pass the aux!” The first Thursday of every month consists of some of the members of dayfour choosing musicians to highlight. We will give you our thoughts, our feelings and our theories on those musicians (strictly from a consumer standpoint).

*Have you got new music you want people to hear? Or perhaps you know someone that you think makes great music and just hasn’t had their big break? Make sure to follow us on IG and email links/information on new music to: hellodayfour@gmail.com. We’ll be reviewing all submissions and deciding to focus on someone new each month.

blkcory’s pick: Brandon Banks

It’s the middle of the summer and most of the music I’ve been listening to has been high-energy because I’ve been outside. However, the vibe’s different when the sun’s setting and I’m coolin’* it at home. So for those of you looking for some new R&B/soul music to listen to during those times, this month I want to highlight California native, Brandon Banks.

Tryin’

Brandon Banks put out a new album last month and although the music video version is a shortened version of the full song, it still hits man. Grab a drink, play this song and watch the sun set. It hits on this soothing reflection of life level that really seems to be a theme in his music.

“Oh lord, Oh lord I’m trying
To walk the true and narrow
Way but, at times I’m primal
Fightin’ to end my rival
I never got disciples
My own two I relied on
In the toughest of battles
Life had me in a chokehold”

Slow Down

This is probably my favourite song off his new album ‘Natural Progressions’. It’s simple, but great songwriting. Plus the guitar and drums are done in a way that makes you believe you’re really in the studio when you first play the record.

“Maybe I should live in the forest
I got more in common with the trees
Lion and the bear don’t bother me
None of us will quarrel to be king”

Lucy

This was the song that first introduced me to Brandon Banks a few years ago. I was on my boy Noble’s balcony talking about music like we always do when he showed me this song. If nothing else, I knew I’d always enjoy listening to this song. To me, it comes off as a song about fighting self-doubt and the negativity projected on us within society. This guy just makes a lot of music that will make you sit there and think while you listen and I appreciate that.

“Don’t try to fly too high
Not a free world
You’ll get banished by the sun”

Like the music? Be sure to follow him on socials @brandonxbanks and stay up to date on any of this new stuff. Hope you enjoyed the read.
